Empty spiracles homeobox 1 (EMX1) is encoded by the EMX1 gene in human. EMX1 is is a member of the EMX family of transcription factors. EMX1, in cooperation with EMX2, acts to generate the boundary between the roof and archipallium in the developing brain. EMX1 may function in combinations with OTX1/2 to specify cell fates in the developing central nervous system.
