Gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor subunit alpha-3 is a protein that is encoded by the GABRA3 gene in human. GABA-A is the receptor protein that, once bound to its ligand, GABA, transmits inhibitory signals in the mammalian brain. GABA-A receptor protein functions as a ligand-gated chloride channel. GABA-A receptors are pentameric, consisting of proteins from several subunit classes: alpha, beta, gamma, delta and rho. GABRA3 transcript undergoes pre-mRNA editing by the ADAR family of enzymes. A-to-I editing changes an isoleucine codon to code for a methionine residue.
