Glutamate ionotropic receptor NMDA type subunit 2c (GRIN2C), also known as GluN2C, is encoded by the GRIN2C gene in human. GRIN2C is a subunit of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, members of the glutamate receptor channel superfamily. NMDA receptors function as heterotetrameric, ligand-gated ion channels with high calcium permeability and voltage-dependent sensitivity to magnesium. NMDA receptors play a key role in the plasticity of synapses, which is believed to underlie memory and learning. Mutations in the GRIN2C gene are associated with pathophysiological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and schizophrenia.
