Integrins are transmembrane proteins that facilitate cell-extracellular matrix interactions or focal adhesions. Ligands for Integrins include fibronectin, vitronectin, collagen and laminin. An integrin molecule is composed of two protein subunits, alpha and beta. Each subunit consists in an extracellular domain, a single transmembrane domain and a cytoplasmic domain.
Integrin alpha M (ITGAM) is a protein subunit that forms heterodimeric integrin alpha-M beta-2 (αMβ2) molecule, also known as macrophage-1 antigen (Mac-1) or complement receptor 3 (CR3). ITGAM, also known as CR3A, or cluster of differentiation molecule 11B (CD11B), is encoded by the ITGAM gene in human. αMβ2 is expressed on the surface of many leukocytes involved in the innate immune system, including monocytes, granulocytes, macrophages, and natural killer cells.
