Collagen alpha-1 (IV) chain is localized in the basement membrane of the mesangium of the glomerulus in the mouse kidney. Note that the localization of collagen alpha-1 (IV) chain is different from that of the alpha-3, -4, or -5 chain. Collagen alpha-1 (IV) chain is also found in the basement membrane of the glomerular parietal epithelium.

Collagen, type IV, alpha-1 chain is a protein that is encoded by the COL4A1 gene in human. Type IV collagen proteins are integral components of the basement membranes.

Type IV collagen is a triple helical oligomer formed by 3 alpha chain molecules. Each chain contains three domains: a short N-terminal domain, a long triple-helical 7S domain at the center, and a non-collagenous 1 (NC1) domain at the C-terminus.

Type IV collagen is found in the ear, the eye, and the kidney.
